From apprentice to Red Seal
Understand the main stages, the role of your apprenticeship authority and the records worth keeping.
Begin with your provincial or territorial authority
A recognised apprenticeship is one route toward Red Seal examination eligibility. The authority where you train can explain the trade’s registration requirements, training structure and certification process. Requirements differ by trade and jurisdiction.
Build a record of your training
Keep your registration documents, training results, work records and contact details organised. Ask your authority and training provider how your progress is recorded and what evidence will be required at each stage. Do not assume that time employed automatically equals recognised apprenticeship credit.
Use the occupational standard as a map
Your workplace may specialise in only part of a trade. Compare your experience with the tasks in the relevant occupational standard and discuss unfamiliar work with your trainer or supervisor. This is a useful way to identify gaps before the final examination.
Confirm eligibility before booking
The administering authority determines whether you qualify to write. Ask what application, supporting documents, fees and booking arrangements apply. Request your preferred examination language and any accommodation well in advance.
Prepare for understanding and application
Combine practical training, the occupational standard, approved learning resources and targeted review. Practice questions can help you identify what needs work; they cannot replace the training or eligibility assessment.
