Why make time to prepare?

Your everyday work may cover only part of the trade.

Experience on one type of installation does not give you equal practice with every system. A structured review can bring circuit fundamentals, distribution and controls back into the same study routine.

The Red Seal exam covers the national trade scope. Use your trade’s occupational standard alongside your study materials. Official preparation guidance ↗

  1. 01

    Find the topics worth reviewing

Use a diagnostic or short quiz to see which questions you miss. Choose your next study session from those results.

  2. 02

    Understand the reasoning

Read why the answer fits and why the alternatives do not. Revisit the principle in a lesson or worked example.

  3. 03

Practise working to a time limit

Complete a 100-question simulation in four hours, with answers held until submission. Review your result afterwards.

The useful part is the review. If you get an answer wrong, use the explanation to identify what to study next.

Sample 1 of 3Installs, services and maintains generating, distribution and service systems

A transformer diagram states that connecting the primary to its higher-voltage tap increases primary turns while secondary turns stay unchanged. At unchanged supply voltage, what happens to the ideal secondary voltage?

Included with your trade

Know what to study. Have a way to work on it.

One package takes you from a first diagnostic to focused study and full exam practice. Your answers, notes and study record stay together.

01

Get used to the full examination

462 practice items, with explanations for every answer choice. Two separate 100-question forms follow the official task counts and question-type ranges. Half exams and short quizzes give you shorter sessions.

Full exam · Half exam · Diagnostic · Quick quiz
02

Learn the decision behind the answer

10 core lessons, 32 case walkthroughs and eight calculation methods. Read an explanation, follow a worked example and check your understanding.

Lessons · Casebook · Numerical-entry practice
03

Spend more time on what needs work

Review missed or saved questions, study by topic and return to scheduled reviews. First-attempt and latest accuracy are shown separately so repeated exposure is visible.

04

Study beyond multiple choice

Use task-specific work-activity drills and recall cards. A practical workshop adds sequencing, matching and written reasoning with model points to compare against.

13 practice formats · Three workshop exercises

Work through the decisions, step by step.

These lessons connect the evidence, the calculation and the next useful check. Each includes a worked scenario, common mistakes and two interactive checks.

Worked lesson

A relocated meter: separate CT scaling from secondary burden

Changing the programmed CT ratio to hide under-registration can conceal a physical burden problem and corrupt otherwise valid readings.

Worked lesson

PV strings: approve the voltage envelope before diagnosing lost output

Equal open-circuit voltages do not demonstrate equal loaded output, and a voltage-only string count is not a complete design approval.

Worked lesson

A faster stop: account for braking energy without confusing STO and isolation

A lower average braking-power calculation does not prove hardware suitability or an acceptable safety stopping sequence.

What you’ll work through.

Use the material to practise these decisions and calculations, then follow up on gaps with the official standard, your training notes and technical references.

  • Circuit fundamentals

Apply voltage, current, resistance and power relationships

  • Distribution & protection

Read the conditions in distribution and protection questions

  • Wiring & installation

Reason through wiring and installation scenarios

  • Motors & controls

    Follow motor-control and troubleshooting sequences

A practical way to use the package

Your first three sessions, planned.

1. Find a starting point

Take 25 questions without seeing answers as you go. Use the result to choose a topic to revisit.

2. Work on one gap

Read a lesson, work a calculation or practise a short set. Save the point you want to remember in a note.

3. Check the reasoning again

Return to missed questions after a break, then try unfamiliar material. Plan a separate four-hour session for Form A; use Form B after further study.

A qualification worth preparing for

Make your first attempt a prepared one.

You have already put time into learning your trade. Give exam preparation a place in that investment: review the work you do less often, understand the reasoning and practise finishing a full paper.

A Red Seal endorsement demonstrates knowledge against a national trade standard and supports recognition across Canada. It can be a useful part of your next career step; it does not promise a particular wage or job.

Before you choose

Common questions.

Clear answers about the preparation, access and examination.

Do I need exam preparation if I already work in the trade?

It depends on your experience across the trade and how recently you have reviewed the material. Use the official self-assessment to check the scope, and try our sample to see whether the question format and explanations are useful to you. Paid preparation is optional.

Can I try it before paying?

Yes. The three examples on this page and the 30-question sample are free. The longer sample includes explanations and a saved result. No purchase or payment card is required.

Are these actual Red Seal exam questions?

No. These are original, independently developed practice materials. They are not actual, recalled or leaked examination questions. Red Seal Trades is not affiliated with the Red Seal Program or a government apprenticeship authority.

What does the 462-item question bank include?

It contains 128 case items based on 32 situations, 72 calculation exercises using eight methods, 12 lesson questions and 250 trade study questions, including 0 shared from related trade packages. The bank represents 282 question families. Related case angles and numerical variants are included in the total. All practice formats, case walkthroughs and the offline paper draw from this material.

How closely does the practice exam match the official exam?

Form A and Form B each contain 100 questions with a four-hour limit. Each follows every published task count and the trade’s ranges for recall, application and critical-thinking questions. The forms share no question families, including related case angles or number variants. Task and subtask mappings are independently assigned. Retaking the same form repeats its questions, and targeted study can include material from either form.

What does lifetime access mean?

C$89 covers one selected trade with a single payment, no subscription and no scheduled access expiry. Other trades are separate packages. Read the access and purchase terms before buying.

Can I use it on my phone or study offline?

The practice environment runs in a browser on a phone, tablet or computer. The full package also includes an HTML workbook you can download, print or save as a PDF, plus recall-card and note exports. Offline work does not sync answers back to your account.

What should I use alongside the practice material?

Use your trade’s occupational standard, training notes, applicable codes and current manufacturer references. The official self-assessment helps you check the wider scope of the trade. Practice results help you choose what to review next.

Does a practice score mean I will pass?

No. A practice result shows how you performed on that question set. Use it to guide further study; it is not a validated prediction or a pass guarantee.
